About Doug

Doug has been the Honorary Historian for four rugby organizations, researched and compiled information for several rugby players inducted into the British Columbia Rugby Union and the British Columbia Sports Halls of Fame, and undertaken just about every position one can during his life-long commitment to the sport. For his longstanding contribution to rugby in British Columbia, he was inducted into the British Columbia Rugby Union Hall of Fame in 2015.

Since completing his master’s thesis on the History of Rugby in Canada (1971) 45 years have passed, and, as no other history of the sport in Canada has been written, the need to add to and update his thesis, and perhaps most importantly turn the work into a book, became self-evident.

It’s a Try! The History of Rugby in Canada is the result of Doug’s many years of involvement with the sport and his painstaking research throughout the country. It is the first such undertaking for rugby in Canada.

I enjoyed Doug’s account of Canadian rugby. This is a long overdue telling of some great rugby stories and events. Doug should be thanked and commended for his considerable efforts to capture the fabric of our great game here in Canada. There are many fond memories of teammates and matches from the past as well as a serious education of how the game has developed and changed over the years.
